The Tokyo dialect of Japanese (standard Japanese) is a pitch-accent language, where each word and following particle exhibits a particular pattern. Some dictionaries provide information on these patterns. In each word, a mora (unit of sound) is either low pitch or high pitch. What is called the accent is the downstep (the transition between a high mora and a low mora). Each word, including the following particle, can have at most one accent, but more than one mora may be high. The first and second mora will also always have a different pitch. There are four possible patterns:
